On Tuesday, just when we thought it would never happen, it did. Turkish Airlines allowed us a baggage waiver of one additional checked bag for each of us - Sandy, Maureen, and me. As Maureen said though, "be careful what you ask for." The total for the three of us is now a whopping 9 checked bags, 3 carry-ons. and 3 "personal" items (we'll stretch that to the limit too).
The checked bags are filled with donated fleece blankets (something like 200 of them), big lego blocks, books, eyeglasses (222 pairs of refurbished prescription glasses from the Killingworth Lions and Leos plus 75 pairs of readers from Job Lot, plus a few more pairs of prescription glasses donated by individuals), 50 kids' soccer jerseys and shorts, 4 soccer balls, toys, books, pens, and on and on. The total weight of the checked luggage will be something like 400 pounds.
We can't thank those people who donated nearly all this stuff, especially our our three grandchildern (Olive age 6, Aiden age 8, and Louise age 10) in NJ. who collected around 40 of the blankets through a blanket drive they initiated themselves and ran at school.
We're now in MD, having delivered the dogs to their temporary abode with their original owners, our daughter Jenny and her family. Tomorrow, we head to NJ to pick up some of the checked bags we left there for safe keeping. Then on Saturday, we are finally off to Kenya from JFK.
